How do I set Required Unpaid Breaks for my Shifts?

Set how much unpaid break time your Shifts require based on Shift length, and see whether it was met when you review timesheets.

What are Required Unpaid Breaks?

A way to tell Workers up front how much unpaid break time your Shifts require.

You set break rules based on how long a Shift runs. Workers see the required break before they accept a Shift, and you'll see whether it was met when you review timesheets.

Break requirements are informational. Break time is never deducted automatically, and a short break never blocks a timesheet.

How is the required break calculated?

Each rule adds break time once a Shift reaches a certain length.

For example, you could require 30 minutes of unpaid break for Shifts over 4 hours. Longer Shifts can require more break time by adding another rule.

Where do I set break rules?

At the Organization, Location, or Shift level.

A Shift uses the rules from the most specific level that has them.

  • Organization: Go to Settings → Required Unpaid Break Time.
  • Location: Go to Locations → Actions → Edit → Location Settings.
  • Individual Shift: Go to the Shift Dashboard → Customize Shift while the Shift is Upcoming.

Will changing my rules affect Shifts I've already posted?

No. Each Shift keeps the break rules it had when it was posted.

To change the rules for one Shift, edit it from Customize Shift before it starts.

How do I review break time on timesheets?

Short breaks are flagged, but you can still approve the timesheet.

If a Worker's break is shorter than required, the break time turns red and a warning appears. Tap Adjust to correct it, or approve the timesheet as it is.
